How you work matters more than how much you already know
In research, the way you approach a problem shapes the outcome far more than your starting knowledge. Below are the habits we value in our laboratory, together with practical advice you can use from day one. Prospective students are welcome to read this too.
1. What makes a student grow
Entrance grades predict very little. The students who grow most in the lab tend to share these habits:
- They keep asking why — they do not let go of a number until they understand where it comes from.
- They start moving early — rather than waiting for a perfect plan, they run a small test and learn from the result.
- They keep records — conditions, procedures, and failures, written so that they themselves can reproduce the work six months later.
- They ask for help early — when stuck, they raise it quickly instead of struggling alone.
- They welcome criticism — comments target the research, not the person, and are material for improvement.
* You are not expected to arrive with all of these. They are learned through training in the lab.
2. How to write a paper
A paper is not something you write after the experiments are done. Start writing when the question takes shape — it clarifies the design of the study itself.
- Build the figures first — deciding the key results figure fixes both the experiments you need and the logical flow.
- One paragraph, one message — put the claim in the first sentence, then the evidence.
- Write the Introduction as a funnel — importance of the field → the unsolved problem → your question.
- Can you state the novelty in one sentence? If not, the core of the study is not yet settled.
- Revise after a break — reading a day later reveals gaps in logic. Reading aloud helps too.
3. How to write an email
Among researchers, a concise email with a clear purpose builds trust — especially when contacting someone for the first time.
- Make the subject line self-explanatory — not "Question", but "Question about measurement conditions for X (Name, University)".
- Identify yourself, state the purpose, then the request — conclusion first.
- Give deadlines and options — instead of "when are you free?", offer "would the 3rd or the 5th suit you?".
- Attach only what is needed, with file names that show content and date.
- Reply promptly — if you cannot answer yet, say "I will get back to you by the 10th".
4. How to prepare a presentation
The goal is not to report everything you did, but to make sure the audience leaves with one thing.
- Decide your single message in one sentence, then cut slides that do not serve it.
- One slide, one message — large text, nothing crammed in.
- Understand every figure well enough to explain it in your own words — always check axes, units, and conditions.
- Rehearse aloud, end to end — at least three times. Running over time signals under-preparation.
- Prepare ten likely questions — especially the ones that target your weakest point.
5. How to think deeply
The quality of research depends on depth of thought. Thinking deeply is not about spending more hours; it is about reformulating the question.
- Ask "why" five times to get past the surface cause.
- Question your assumptions — the conditions you take for granted are the ones most worth testing.
- Rewrite in your own words — after reading a paper, explain its point in your own sentences.
- Look for counter-examples — search for evidence against your idea before evidence for it.
- Explain it to someone — where you cannot explain, you do not yet understand.
6. How to manage multiple tasks
Research, classes, clinical training, and conference preparation routinely overlap. You cannot do everything perfectly at once, so priorities matter.
- Write down deadlines and time estimates — do not manage them only in your head.
- Do first whatever keeps others waiting — work that depends only on you can wait.
- Break large tasks down — not "write the paper", but "make Figure 1".
- Protect blocks of uninterrupted time — thinking does not fit into fragments.
- Flag problems early — share a likely delay well before the deadline, not on the day.
